01

Overview

Transnet Cloud partnered with Kolekto to modernize its group payment collection platform on AWS, strengthening security, scalability, and real-time payment tracking for communities and organisations running high-demand collection campaigns across Nigeria.

02

The Challenge

As demand grew across campuses, communities, and local organizations, Kolekto needed to reduce downtime during high-demand campaigns — such as church service hours and community meeting dates — protect its payment collection portal from automated bot attacks and scraping, simplify data aggregation and analytics, and remain cost-effective as scale increased.

Proposed Solution & Architecture

Transnet Cloud designed a secure, scalable AWS architecture purpose-built for high-demand payment collection campaigns.

Compute, Frontend & Modernization

Amazon EC2

Backend API distributed across two Availability Zones in a custom VPC

AWS Amplify

Managed frontend hosting with global CDN, automatic SSL, and CI/CD deployment

Serverless Roadmap

Ongoing evaluation of serverless components for cost optimization

Security & Payment Protection

AWS WAF

Managed rules for SQLi/XSS/bot detection plus custom rate-limiting on payment endpoints

AWS Secrets Manager

Automatic rotation for all payment API credentials

AWS KMS

Customer-managed encryption at rest across RDS and S3, TLS enforced in transit

Database, Monitoring & Availability

Amazon RDS (Multi-AZ)

Managed relational database with automated failover and point-in-time recovery

Amazon CloudWatch

Application, database, and WAF monitoring with SNS-routed alarms

Amazon Route 53

Health-checked DNS routing with automatic failover

Amazon S3

Payment receipts, collection records, and application backups

Outcomes & Success Metrics

Measurable results protecting community fundraising campaigns across Nigeria.

Zero successful bot submissions to active collection campaigns since deploying WAF with custom rate-limiting

Frontend deployment time reduced from hours to under 5 minutes with Amplify CI/CD

Continuous RDS Multi-AZ availability with zero collection campaigns disrupted by database failures

TCO Analysis

Transnet Cloud modelled cost across compute, database, frontend hosting, WAF, secrets management, encryption, monitoring, and storage.

Lessons Learned

Simple IP-based rate limiting was too aggressive — Nigerian mobile users commonly share carrier NAT IP addresses.

Combining IP-based rate limiting with session token validation lets legitimate contributors through even when their IP is flagged.

This WAF pattern is now reused across all future deployments for Nigerian consumer payment platforms.
