01

Overview

Transnet Cloud partnered with Federal College of Education Iwo to migrate its e-learning platform to AWS, resolving critical scalability issues and frequent downtime through a highly available, auto-scaling architecture built to support thousands of concurrent students.

02

The Challenge

The College's e-learning platform suffered significant scalability limitations, resulting in slow load times and system crashes whenever concurrent usage spiked — particularly during timed assessments and semester-start enrollment, when downtime risked disrupting students' access to coursework and exams.

Proposed Solution & Architecture

Transnet Cloud designed a highly available, auto-scaling AWS architecture purpose-built for exam-critical e-learning traffic.

Compute & Availability

Amazon EC2 Auto Scaling

An Auto Scaling group of EC2 instances that scales out automatically during exam periods and enrollment spikes

Elastic Load Balancing

Distributes traffic across healthy instances, removing the single points of failure that caused past outages

Database & Content Delivery

Amazon RDS for MySQL

Managed, highly available database replacing a self-managed instance that was prone to crashes under load

Amazon CloudFront

Global CDN caching course content and static assets, cutting load times for students nationwide

Outcomes & Success Metrics

Measurable reliability and performance gains for an exam-critical e-learning platform.

Achieved 99.99% uptime, eliminating the system crashes that previously disrupted student access

Content delivery speeds increased 70% through Amazon CloudFront caching of course materials

Platform reliably supported thousands of concurrent students during high-traffic timed assessments

Lessons Learned

The College's self-managed database was the platform's single biggest point of failure, crashing under concurrent load during exams and enrollment.

Migrating to Amazon RDS for MySQL — a fully managed database service — significantly reduced administrative overhead while adding automated backups and Multi-AZ resilience the self-managed setup never had.

This shift from self-managed to fully managed data services is now Transnet Cloud's default recommendation for education platforms carrying exam-critical, uptime-sensitive workloads.
